Future Wine Judge? This Canberra program is your launchpad

Are you ready to move beyond tasting and experience the rigour of professional wine show judging?
The ASVO, in partnership with the Canberra and Region Wine Show, is launching a pilot Wine Show Judge Training Program – an immersive, hands-on experience designed to develop the next generation of wine show judges.

This is not a tasting workshop – it’s a deep dive into the discipline, structure, and standards of professional judging. Over two intensive days, participants will gain first-hand experience in wine show assessment, panel dynamics, and scoring calibration. Trainees will operate as an additional judging panel, evaluating real show entries under authentic show conditions and the guidance of an experienced wine show chair and trainer.

Program Highlights

  • Structured learning in show judging principles, scoring calibration, and discussion processes with one-on-one feedback opportunities from the show trainer

  • Real-world experience as a participating panel in the Canberra Wine Show.

  • Optional third day to stay on as a steward, assisting with trophy tastings and results – a rare behind-the-scenes opportunity.

  • Includes invitation to the Judges’ Dinner, providing valuable networking with leading wine judges and industry figures.

  • Facilitated by Adrian Sparks Chief Wine maker and GM of Mt Pleasant Wines, respected wine educator and show judge.
