TAFE NSW has designed a Diploma of Viticulture (AHC51524) tailored for people already working in the grape and wine industry. Whether you're aiming to become a vineyard manager, a grape liaison officer, or a viticultural technical officer, this qualification bridges the gap between everyday operations and advanced vineyard management.
What You’ll Actually Learn
This isn't just about pruning and picking. The diploma focuses heavily on the science, strategy, and business of growing exceptional grapes. Through a mix of theory and practical coursework, you’ll learn how to:
Develop a full grape production plan.
Monitor and manage soils for premium production.
Design and manage water systems.
Tackle long-term weed, pest, and disease control while applying strict biosecurity measures.
Manage enterprise staff (because managing vines is only half the job—managing the crew is the rest!).
You’ll complete 10 units in total (6 core and 4 specialty), and because it’s a nationally recognised qualification, the skills you learn can take you to wine regions across Australia.
Is This Course Right For You?
Because this is an advanced diploma, it’s not for absolute beginners. To jump in, you’ll need:
Current employment in a vineyard or wine industry role.
At least 1 year of industry experience at an operator level.
Access to a vineyard throughout your enrolment to complete your project-based assessments.
Photo ID proving you are 18+ (essential for the wine evaluation units).
The Logistics
TAFE NSW knows you’re already working, so the course is built with flexibility in mind:
Delivery: It’s a "Combination" study option—meaning you get a mix of on-campus, virtual, online, and workplace training.
Location: Kurri Kurri Campus (Hunter Valley).
Pacing: Variable, self-paced study with fixed due dates.
Duration: 1.5 years.
Next Start Date: October 12, 2026.
Cost: Anywhere from $0 to $4,820, depending on your eligibility for reduced fees or subsidies.
